Dion Smith is now accused of killing 79-year-old Ronald Gilbert last month after Gilbert's neighbors called police to report a strange smell coming from his apartment, the Middlesex District Attorney's Office said on Wednesday, March 15.

Officers found Gilbert's decomposing body with more than two dozen stab wounds on Feb. 22. Officials believe he was killed two months earlier in late December.

Smith did not live in that building, and investigators do not believe he knew Gilbert, the prosecutor's office said. Smith is also accused of stealing Gilbert's car.

Police described Smith as 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighing 165 pounds. He's balding with distinctive tattoos on his neck.

Officers ask anyone with information on Smith's whereabouts to contact Malden Police at 781-322-1212 or Massachusetts State Police detectives at 781-897-6600. Investigators said he should not be approached.
